About William Stevens
William Stevens is a Muruwari man, adopted from birth into a proud Kamiloroi family. Raised in Newcastle and now based in Sydney, William has dedicated his life to sharing Aboriginal culture, knowledge, and stories with diverse audiences.
With over 13 years of experience teaching Aboriginal astronomy, William is passionate about connecting people to the night sky through traditional knowledge systems. He works closely with academics in the field of cultural astronomy, contributing to the growing recognition of Aboriginal science and its deep understanding of the relationships between land, sky, and culture.
William brings a rich and varied background to his work. He spent time as a zookeeper working with Australian fauna and flora, and has over 21 years of experience in the tourism industry. For the past decade, he has also been actively involved in Aboriginal education, creating meaningful learning experiences that foster respect and cultural awareness. A gifted storyteller, William enjoys sharing culture through traditional artifact making and oral storytelling, ensuring knowledge is passed on in authentic and engaging ways.
Outside of his cultural and educational work, William is also a dedicated martial artist, holding a black belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and a brown belt in Judo—reflecting his discipline, resilience, and lifelong commitment to learning.
